Once we made it to Charleston, SC, we had fulfilled our insurance obligation to be north of Georgia for hurricane season. However, our next goal over the summer was to get to the Chesapeake Bay area, specifically Zimmerman Marine in Mathews, VA. Zimmerman has come to be the go-to spot for catamaran haulouts (bringing the boat out of the water) and maintenance. Mike has been putting together a list of maintenance things and projects to do while hauled out.

As we were passage planning to get to the Chesapeake Bay, Tropical Storm Collin was making its way along the same route we would take. Due to this, our original passage plan of going straight to the Chesapeake had to be broken up into two smaller passages.

Passage #5 - Charleston, SC to Beaufort, NC (7.2.2022 - 7.3.2022)

We ended up departing Charleston around 11:30am EST and had a relatively smooth passage in terms of wind and seas. We timed our departure so that we would be behind Tropical Storm Collin and it worked out well. On my first night watch (12am-4am), we were coming up to Collin based on radar. On that watch, I ended up seeing 13 lightning strikes in the distance between 1-2:30am (and caught one on video!).

At the end of our passage, we sailed 216NM over 31 hours.

Beaufort, NC

This small, outer banks-esqe town was a nice break and getaway until we could round North Carolina into Virginia. We were able to explore the area and Ollie became a local favorite at most of the bars/restaurants along the dock!

We also got to meet and chat with fellow Lagoon 440 owners Jim and Abigail who were anchored next to us.

Passage #6 - Beaufort, SC to Mathews, VA (7.16.2022 - 7.17.2022)

After two weeks in Beaufort, we had a weather window for our final leg to the Chesapeake Bay. We departed Beaufort around 6am EST and had some mild rain and thunder leaving, but then clear skies and calm seas for the remainder. There was zero wind so we ended up motorsailing the entire trip.

At the end of our passage, we sailed 232NM over 32 hours.

We anchored in the Mobjack Bay area in anticipation of our haulout with Zimmerman on 7.18.2022.
