This morning we plotted our course back to Grenada from Carriacou. We sailed a total of 36NM over 6 hours and 36 minutes, with an average speed of 6-7 knots.
Unlike our previous sails, we were sailing downwind (away from) rather than upwind (towards). Captain Andy showed us how to create a jibe preventer – a jibe is when the boat turns away from the wind, and when you’re sailing downwind you are more likely to accidentally (unintentionally) jibe. The jibe preventer attaches to the end of the boom along either a port/starboard cleat). About 2 hours into our sail, we came upon a small squall (storm cloud) – we were able to identify it along the horizon as well as visualize it on our radar. About 5 hours into our sail, we came upon a larger squall.
Throughout each of our routes, Captain Andy would put our fishing lines – up until today he had been unsuccessful. But after we got through the second squall, he caught a barracuda! We came about a mooring field just south of Dragon Bay and secured our mooring ball for the night. We then had some battered barracuda and pasta for dinner (and yes, I ate fish) :)
